Hawk and Pine In traditional Japan, only samurai practiced falconry. Samurai chose hawks as a warrior symbol because of their swift and courageous hunting skills. In this design pairing, the pine on which the hawk sits represents strength and reliability because pines can be counted on to remain green throughout the year. These were considered important virtues for a good warrior.
