Shojo

Shojo are mythical creatures with long red hair that live in the sea. They are extremely fond of sake (rice wine). Ancient stories tell how shojo gave magical sake which brought health and good fortune to virtuous humans.

This shojo drinks sake from an enormous sake cup. His sake ladle lies on the ground near chrysanthemum flowers which were traditionally steeped in sake to ensure longevity.

Shojo

Shojo are mythical creatures with long red hair that live in the sea. They are extremely fond of sake (rice wine). Ancient stories tell how shojo gave magical sake which brought health and good fortune to virtuous humans.

On this complex pattern, two shojo carry sake ladles and direct their interest toward a large jar of sake which is inscribed with the character for “treasure.” The shojo on the right holds a very large sake cup over his head. They are dressed in traditional Noh robes and the shojo dancing on the sake jar rim brings to mind a famous Noh theater shojo dance scene.
