Plum and Pine

The dominant image on this finely woven asa panel consists of pine needles and plum blossoms. The geometric crossed lines may represent bamboo, thereby completing the “Three Friends of Winter” grouping. The emphasis on plum and pine, which together form a homophone for “waiting to give birth,” has strong fertility symbolism. Paired pine needles represent marital fidelity and happiness.
